Report 39: The Road Ahead: The Trends in Work and Career Choices of BSCD Graduates
In the light of the present conditions in the Philippine settings, the increasing unemployment, marginalization, abuses and exploitation can be said to be indicative of the country’s underdevelopment. Thus, there is an apparent need for effective development programs and actions. In the goals of providing a means of solution, came the community development perspective. Community development was first born as mass education during the post-World War II setting to provide a means for recovery of the affected sectors.
Today, the present community development program offered by the University of the Philippines has developed these development principles and adopted it to the Philippine setting. Rooted analysis methods, and participatory approaches are just some of the tools that have been integrated in the program in its search to achieve its goals of a development biased towards the marginalized sectors. As it seeks to train and develop graduates equipped with the necessary tools and its people-oriented principle, this research work has been dedicated into evaluating whether these goals were met. This study focuses on the graduates of the course of the BS Community Development in University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City for the past ten years of 1992-2002. The main purpose of this research was in determining the career fields chosen by its graduates and the factors that affected them in the· hopes of providing a better understanding of the trends involved in their career selection. Hopefully, it will also provide a short glimpse of the life after graduation for those students still undergraduate in BSCD. The methods used for data gathering were mainly through survey questionnaires and personal interviews along with the few who responded through phone and e-mail.
