Report 27: UP Education in Perspective: A comparative analysis on the perceptions of students on commercialization of education
Through comparative analysis and documentation of multiple responses to survey questions with students from six colleges of the university (CSSP, ECON, BA, MUSIC, ENG’G and CHE), this research intends to refine perceptions on two interlinking concepts: commercialization of assets and commercialization of education. Survey questions were designed to determine the perceptions of students on UP’s plan of commercializing its assets vis-a-vis the concept of commercialization of education. Answers are expected to give light to how far students understand these two concepts independent of each other. While commercialization of assets and commercialization of education may be interlinked, this research presupposes that the scope and the possible impacts of these concepts are not explicitly defined such that it might create unnecessary confusion. This research wants to clear if commercialization of assets is synonymous
with commercialization of education or if the former can lead to the realization of the latter.
This research, moreover, puts UP education in a lighted perspective as it struggles yet, still envisions to offer quality education and relevant learning despite the perceived failure of the state to sustain its academic, internal, and external needs as a higher learning institution. Based on the gathered data, both primary (through survey) and secondary (through featured articles), this research attempts to provide a clear picture if UP, through leasing out of its assets is oriented toward improving and sustaining the quality of its education, or simply wants to maintain its reputation as a revered academic institution by welcoming industrial advancements.
